2008 British Supermoto Championship Round 7 & 8

Teeside Autodrome in Middlesborough hosted rounds 7 & 8 of the British Supermoto Championship this past weekend. A firm favourite with all the riders with its twists and curves and fast banked turns and despite an unfavourable weather forecast racing got underway with clear skies.

The usual faces again shone in first practice and then again in qualifying with the front row headed by Aprilia Factory rider Christian Iddon (S2), KTM UK Factory rider Matt Winstanley (S1) and Multiple Irish Champion Keith Farmer (S2) on the SMRacing Rocket Centre Aprilia UK machine.

As lunchtime and race one approached mother nature decided to treat the paddock to what is perhaps the biggest rain shower experienced this year, causing flooding on some parts of the circuit and resulting in a 30 minute halt to the proceedings whilst the standing water was swept away and the circuit made safe.

Under now clear skies but a damp track race one fired into life and immediately Farmer and Iddon resumed combat with Farmer taking advantage of a near crash from Iddon and establishing a small gap which he maintained to the finish. Race two, and with a completely dry track the tables turned with Iddon making a better start and managing to control the gap to Farmer, despite making small inroads into Iddon's lap times Farmer had to settle for second leaving the fight for the overall to the last race. The final race was perhaps the most exciting race of the day to watch, Farmer again gated poorly but made good strong passes to end lap two 4 seconds behind Iddon, lap by lap Farmer set fastest lap times pushing his pace to claw the gap back and with less than five minutes to go he surged passed Iddon on the off road section. Iddon immediately tried to respond but Farmer managed to pull away and then maintain a two second gap to the flag and set the fastest lap of the day to collect the overall win and extend his Championship lead over Iddon.

Day two and Round 8 started with better weather forecast and by mid morning the track temperature was well up on the previous day throwing out many settings gained from Saturday. Farmer perhaps suffered most with a rear tyre blistering during the short qualifying session caused by damage picked up in the off road section plunging him down to ninth on the grid.

It was always going to be hard work for Farmer but confident of his pace from Saturday he gated well and rounded the first lap in touch with the leaders. As he began to close on Iddon the World Championship rider made a very rare error clipping the chicane and tipping over onto the infield. This was all Farmer needed and he cruised to and easy victory. Race two and this time Farmer was boxed in on the start and despite good strong passes which got him back to second Iddon was gone and a late mistake in the off road robbed Farmer of second by 4/1000Th's second at the line. With Iddon and Farmer again tied on points race three started poorly for Farmer with him rounding the first lap in tenth. Despite a big charge and again setting the fastest lap of the day it wasn't enough to catch Iddon and he had to settle for third position and second overall losing 5 points to his Championship rival.

With still three rounds to go the Championship now looks mathematically to be between the two Aprilia riders Iddon and Farmer. A relative drought from British Championship Supermoto for six weeks till the next round leaves time for both riders to recover from their summer battles, with both riders hoping to compete in up coming Grand Prix's before then.

Ollie Harrison continued his total domination of the youth S4 class with two pole positions and six wins he is almost assured of his first British Championship title with over 100 points over his nearest rival.

Ollie also with special dispensation due to his age competes in S3 (250) class and again this weekend battled above his weight with older riders, qualifying on both days in fourth position and finishing 6-3-4 on Saturday for fifth overall and 6-5-3 on Sunday, again for fifth overall. His current form drawing him close to a top five Championship finish.

The team would like to thank all its 2008 sponsors for making this season possible so far.
